To date I have looked at book after book about cartoon character development only to be disappointed. Further, I know very few art schools that teach the business of art or why not to worry about all the "art" rules. So I am going to do it. Today's artists are good at breaking art rules, but I feel one should know them first. I also believe they should know how to draw and have some talent. I am not saying everyone should go to art school, especially because I feel they are too abstract for students to truly know their trade, but knowledge of basic techniques, styles, etc. should form an artist's foundation. Business is another area artists need to be educated in. The idea of having to be a starving artist or only hobbiest is nonsense. Artists should spend a large part of their day creating, but working on marketing, organization, and the financial aspects is critical. An artist can create more effectively if his/her finances are in good shape. Finally, carton character development; I know I am not the greatest, but I have learned a lot over my career (thirty years) and I want to share those insights free for my visitors. So let's have fun and do this! Doc
